Started by a Scottish tea company in 1859, the 1,600 acre Glenburn Tea Estate now belongs to the Prakash family who carry forth a hundred year legacy in tea. Located in Darjeeling, the boutique hotel has 8 suites in two heritage bungalows – The Water Lily and Burra Bungalow. In 2018, the family unveiled the elegant 9-suite Glenburn Penthouse in the heart of historic Kolkata, with a stunning rooftop infinity pool. Both properties have magnificent views; the tea estate bungalows look to Mount Kanchenjunga, tea fields, forests and rivers, and the city hotel overlooks Kolkata’s iconic Victoria Memorial and lush green maidan.
Glenburn generously supports their local Nepali-origin community, with 70 villagers working between both hotels, medical and educational support to tea-estate families, and even a music and dance academy to preserve local traditions and culture.
Their wildlife conservation efforts include protecting 1000 acres of private forest with watering holes to attract barking deer and other animals, and planting trees to attract more birds and increase biodiversity. A core initiative also aims to preserve and increase numbers of Golden Mahseer in their rivers – an endangered fish under threat from local fishing malpractices.
