Edakkal Hermitage Resort in Wayanad is part of a unique local effort to conserve and promote the heritage and biodiversity of its vicinity. Located along the trail that leads to the Edakkal Caves which are 4600’above the sea level, the Hermitage clings to the high cliffs that house the pre-historic Edakkal Caves. A unique getaway for tourists, Edakkal Hermitage is placed amidst rich coffee and pepper plantations, in an idyllic location covered with green foliage.
Edakkal Hermitage Resort offers a host of visitor services including an information centre, cottage accommodation, camping facilities and a tree house. The cottages are comfortable and filled with the spirit of the Edakkal Caves. Designed by an artist for an artist, ‘Meghalaya’, the single room cottage located on top of a rock is the ideal place for one who loves to meditate on nature. Another cottage,’ Ellora’, with a mini auditorium on the rock, is meant for dancers and musicians. Located adjacent to a lotus pond is Fawcett cottage, named after the police officer who discovered the Edakkal caves in 1894.
Other attraction at the Hermitage are a thactched restaurant serving tasty Malayalee cuisine, coffee shop within a natural cavern, library, spice garden and open-air auditorium for culture and heritage events. The sunset view from the Hermitage is a bewitching experience.
The Edakkal Caves situated at the Ambukuthi Mala on Western Ghats in Wayanad are a unique archive of Neolithic engravings with a prominent place on the archaeological map. A prehistoric rock shelter formed naturally out of a strange disposition of three huge boulders, the right and left walls inside the cave abound in engravings, etchings and cravings said to signify a realm of strange meanings intelligible only to the people of those ancient times.
The other near by attraction include a Jain temple, Wayanad Heritage Museum, Phantom Rock, The Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Meenmutty Falls, Kanthanpara Falls, Sentinal Rock Falls, Chembra Peak, Pookote Lake, Seetha Lava Kusha Temple, Uravu, which particular for Bamboo, Kuruva Island, Muthanga, Bandipur and Mudumalai sanctuaries.
